Main Street Shop & Stroll this weekend in OTR

Well, another weekend is here and so is another reason to come out and support your local establishments in downtown Cincinnati. Last weekend was “Holidays in the Bag” in Over-the-Rhine’s Gateway Quarter, and this weekend you have the Main Street Holiday Stroll & Shop! Ever been to Second Sunday on Main? Well, it is kind of like that which means fun places, fun people, and fun things!

The main difference between this and Second Sunday? Well, Main Street Stroll & Shop officially runs Saturday from 11am to 7pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. While you can go at any time, I highly recommend going early on Saturday. You see, in conjunction with Stroll & Shop the Art Academy will be holding its annual Snowflake Sale. While their site says that it runs until 3pm, I have seen 2pm elsewhere so come early and check it out so you don’t miss it.

Whenever you go, there are plenty of places to visit on north Main Street. The only holdover from “Holidays in the Bag” is Atomic Number 10 which will be participating with nearly every other establishment along the stretch of Main between 13th and Liberty streets. As you probably already know there are a ton of art galleries on that stretch as well as a bunch of unique shops where you can find that gift that you cannot find anywhere else. While there is no “official” discount feel free to ask each merchant about exclusive holiday specials.

Surely you are bound to work up an appetite or get thirsty along the way! There are many options to choose from including Mixx Ultra Lounge, Iris BookCafe, and Shadeau Breads right there along Main Street. Of course there are a few just off Main like Grammers, Lucy Blue, and Coffee Emporium.

So get out and find some fun gifts this weekend, support your local businesses, and experience some of the magic of downtown! A few other things worth checking out include the ice rink at Fountain Square and the Duke Energy Train Display. Of course, you could just be a little adventurous and find your own way around!

2nd Annual ‘Holidays in the Bag’ takes place on Black Friday – 11/27

Ready?! Set?! Shop!! Yes, Friday marks the “official” start to the holiday shopping season. After food and family on Thursday, many folks like to get out and shop on Friday, and you can count on the UrbanCincy staff to be a part of that crowd. But, we won’t be shopping just anywhere, and don’t think you should be either.

The businesses in historic Over-the-Rhine’s Gateway Quarter are hosting their second annual Holidays in the Bag event on Friday from 9am to 9pm. The shopping event not only supports a local charity, The Emmanuel Community Center, but it also supports the merchants and their stores in Gateway Quarter, and it supports YOU the shopper! Talk about a win for everyone involved! And if that weren’t enough, Santa himself will be riding through the streets on a Segway thanks to the neighborhood Segway Store.

Top, left to right: A Lucky Step, Park+Vine, Outside, Joseph Williams Home. All photos taken by Randy Simes.

Here’s how the whole thing works: first, stop by the corner of 12th and Vine streets to purchase your special Gateway Quarter Shopping Bag for a small donation. Then take your bag and go shopping! Try out some independent stores in The Q such as Park + Vine, Metronation, or Outside (see the full list below). Each and every shop will be offering a special discount for whatever you can fit into your special shopping bag, with most offering a 20% discount. You should definitely make plans to get out and get some unique gifts for the people in your life while saving a few bucks!

If you read UrbanCincy regularly you know we support the 3/50 Project because of what it does for the community around us. When you support a locally owned shop, nearly 70% of the money stays inside the community, whereas if you buy from a chain it’s more like 40%. So you can take your money to the mall and see over half of it leave our area, or you can come to The Q and keep most of it in Cincinnati.

Come anytime during the day, and stop by a local establishment for a snack or beverage. Shopping early? There is Coffee Emporium on Central Parkway. Planning on coming around midday? Stop into Venice on Vine for some lunch. Have to work on Friday and planning on coming later on? Below Zero is there so that you can reward yourself with a Friday afternoon cocktail. After all, shopping is hard work!

Participating Shops
Park+Vine | Mica 12/v | The Little Mahatma | Switch | Incredible Creations | Metronation | Joseph Williams Home | A Lucky Step | Outside | Atomic #10 | Ensemble Theatre.

Participating Food & Drink
Lavomatic | Venice on Vine | Coffee Emporium | Below Zero Lounge.

Memorial Day – 2012*

So, I’m sitting here at the Christian Moerlein Lager House enjoying a Helles and thinking about what lies ahead this summer… it’s going to be a busy one! Living in Cincinnati has never been better with all of the new things we have going on; I’m so glad I decided to stay after we turned down Issue Nine back in 2009. Back then, the downtown area was just starting to turn around compared to where we are today. I mean, Fountain Square had again taken its rightful place as the center of our community and things up in the Gateway Quarter were really starting to tick. There was some real promise, but many people had their doubts as well. Now though, there are very few doubters left, and almost all the concerns from back then have been alleviated.

I mean, the things that are going on these days in and around the center city are just amazing compared to where we have been for at least the past twenty years. I would call it a renaissance or even a rebirth, but it’s more like a brand Cincinnati is developing right before our very eyes. The Banks project is coming along nicely, even if we all know that it seems like it was talked about forever. We all knew that even when the project started it was going to take a while, but it’s so good to see people living and working there even now! Alongside it Riverfront Park has added a wonderful green space at the base of the freshly painted Roebling Suspension Bridge. I have to say it is so much nicer to sit here and watch people in the park than it would be to see another parking lot along the riverfront. Hard to believe we had to live through that for all those years!

Central Riverfront Park, Great American Tower at Queen City Square, Phase 1 of The Banks – Renderings Provided.

The city’s tallest building, The Tiara Tower, has been open for a little over a year and not only does it look great but it has a nice occupancy rate as well. It has brought a lot of jobs and driven interest in additional ambitious building projects around town. For example, over in Newport more development has taken hold as Ovation opened up recently. Really, when you stop and think about it, this area along the Ohio River is booming and both sides of the river have taken great pride in it all.

Speaking of pride, the Cincinnati Streetcar opened up early this year and the response has been amazing! People park down at The Banks, jump on the streetcar and find their way around town very easily. They are able to ride up to Findlay Market among other places, and next year they will be able to get all the way up to the University. New businesses and residences abound along the line and have really added a substantial amount of tax revenue to the city coffers that were not looking good even three years ago.

The Cincinnati Streetcar travels on Walnut Street past the Aronoff Center and the Backstage Entertainment District south towards The Banks.

What else is going on? Well, the World Choir Games will be here before we know it and we are expecting quite a crowd. It is the first time the games will be in the United States and estimates are that 250,000 people will be here in town in less than six weeks to take them in. It’s going to be quite an event and the hotels have been booked up for the last year. There is also a huge Pomegranates show this coming weekend. They haven’t been in town for a while because of their touring schedule, and we all miss them dearly. They really started cooking in 2009 back when we were all concerned with Issue 9. Additionally, the Major League All-Star Game will be here in 2015 and we are all looking forward to that gigantic event! People around the area are so glad that we have a city to show off and one that we can be proud of!

Cincinnati… we’ve had a lot of hurdles and obstacles to overcome, but things have been moving in the right direction for a while now and I don’t see how the momentum could be stopped!

*Denotes that this is a vision of where we are headed, and not truly a post from the future. As you can see, almost all of these projects are underway in 2009 and this post was meant to tie them all together & draw a picture of what it all will look like. As of now, the All-Star game & streetcar are the the biggest dreams, but hopefully that all begins to change tomorrow. NO ON NINE!

Whomageddon rocks Northside Tavern, benefits WVQC

Halloween, local music, and legendary rock and roll bands will come together tonight for a unique event. Whomageddon will feature local bands dressed up and performing as The Who, The Ramones, and Devo. The performers include John Curley (The Staggering Statistics, The Afghan Whigs), Andrew Higley (Pearlene, Chocolate Horse), Scotty Wood, Jason Knarr, Dave Cupp, and more. This week, John Curley talked to the Enquirer about the event and his love of The Who.
The show takes place at Northside Tavern tonight, starting at 9 pm. Admission is free (you must be 21+ to enter), but proceeds from the bar will benefit WVQC, the new public access radio station being launched by Media Bridges.
WVQC has been in the works for several months, and Media Bridges is trying to raise the last bit of money needed to launch the station. Do your part in helping to get local voices on the air–and just have a good time–by coming out to tonight’s fundraiser.
