Jake Speed and the Freddies at Arnold’s 1/16

This Saturday, January 16 Cincinnati’s oldest bar, Arnold’s Bar & Grill, will welcome Jake Speed and the Freddies for a live performance brought to you by Christian Moerlein.

There will be beer specials on Christian Moerlein/Hudepohl Schoenling’s wide variety of Cincinnati beers, and Moerlein representatives will even be there all night handing out free Christian Moerlein gear. Arnold’s will be serving a special menu that night as consisting of different foods made with each of the Moerlein beers.

Jake Speed and the Freddies will start at 8pm and play throughout the night. Arnold’s Bar & Grill offers one of Cincinnati’s most unique and comfortable bar scenes, and is easily accessible located in the heart of downtown Cincinnati (map). There is no cover charge for this event.

Moerlein to tap Christkindl Winter Warmer Ale – 11/13

Christian Moerlein in combination with the German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati will be celebrating the coming of the winter season with the annual keg tapping of Christian Moerlein’s Christkindl Winter Warmer Ale (my favorite of the Moerlein bunch). Christian Moerlein owner Greg Hardman says that the Christkindl Winter Warmer Ale is inspired by the German spirit of holiday gift-giving.

The German connections of this event are strong as the Cincinnati Central Turnverein is Cincinnati’s oldest German-American society and was originally founded back in 1848 in historic Over-the-Rhine where Christian Moerlein once called home.

“What better place to enjoy Moerlein’s Christkindl Ale then at the Cincinnati Central Turnverein,” said Don Heinrich Tolzmann, president, German-American Citizens League.

As for the beer, Christian Moerlein describes Christkindl as a large malt-bodied, Winter Warmer Ale with the essence of chocolate sweetness, subtle spice flavors, and a balanced hop finish. I personally love the spice flavors that come through and make for a perfect winter ale. The beer will be available all over town in six packs, draft, and in Moerlein’s Discovery Pack.

The ceremony will be held this Friday, November 13 at the Cincinnati Central Turners Club House (map) from 4pm to 12am with the first tapping at 7pm. All proceeds will go to benefit the German-American Citizens League and the Cincinnati Central Turners. Admission is free and open to the public; free parking is available.

Moerlein beer tasting at the Verona – 10/15

In true Cincinnati politico fashion, a Christian Moerlein beer tasting will be held for Councilmember Greg Harris’ reelection campaign. The beer tasting will take place at the historic Verona at Eden Park (map) on Thursday, October 15 from 5pm to 7pm.

If the great beer isn’t enough to get you there then maybe the chance to rub elbows with Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory or President and CEO of Christian Moerlein, Greg Hardman, will do the trick. And since this is a political fundraiser there are suggested donations (listed below) for those interested in attending.

Cincinnatians for Progress fundraiser at Mecklenburg Gardens – 10/13

Cincinnatians for Progress (CFP) will be holding their final fundraiser of this campaign season on Tuesday, October 13 from 5:30pm to 8pm at Mecklenburg Gardens in Corryville. In addition to the food and drink, CFP will also unveil their television commercial and watch the Mayoral debate.

Mecklenburg Gardens is one of Cincinnati’s oldest restaurants and boasts that German charm Cincinnati is so well known for. There will be plenty of Mecklenburg’s famous German food, plus some of the best beer in town. General admission is only $30 and will help keep Cincinnati moving forward with rail transportation choices for its residents, visitors and workers alike. For those looking to contribute a little more, CFP has identified three additional levels of contributors: Danke Schon ($250), Lederhosen ($500), and Burgermeister ($1,000).

Mecklenburg Gardens (map) is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the proposed Uptown streetcar route and presently boasts nearby on-street parking for automobiles, bicycle racks, and is served by Metro’s #39, 46, 51, 75x and 78 bus routes that will all get you within a few blocks of the restaurant. Clifton Beer Fest tonight at Fries Cafe

The 6th Annual Clifton Beer Fest takes place tonight from 4pm to 9pm at Fries Cafe on Jefferson Avenue (map). The beer tasting event will feature 70 American craft beers available in 4oz tastings for $1 to $2 each.

In addition to the great beers to sample, the Rumpke Mountain Boys will providing live music on Fries’ outdoor patio. There will also be burgers, bratts and metts available in addition to the best shuffle board in Cincinnati downstairs in the comfortable main bar area.

Last year’s Clifton Beer Fest was great fun with an absolutely fantastic beer selection. The upstairs outdoor patio was a terrific spot to mill about enjoying a variety of beers and fraternizing with all the other beer-lovers and Cliftonites. If you haven’t been to Fries Cafe (not pronounced like the things you get from McDonalds – tip: pronounce the second vowel in German words), then you must go to check out the great neighborhood bar that is extremely comfortable and a great place to have a few drinks served up over good conversation.

UrbanCincy’s recommendation: Get to Fries Cafe early (around 4pm) for some great beer, food and music then make your way to Fountain Square to catch the amazing concert lineup for Popopolis which starts at 7pm. Since you’ve more than likely had too much to drink to drive down to Fountain Square just hop on the Cincinnati Streetcar and head south until it drops you right off at the Square #17, 18, or 19 Metro bus route that picks up at Clifton and Ludlow avenues. Take the bus all the way down to Government Square and simply walk a block west to Fountain Square.
