Roeblingfest expands to include focus on food & music

Photo provided by Paul Collett

This weekend marks an annual celebration for one of Cincinnati’s most iconic landmarks, The John A Roebling Suspension Bridge. Roeblingfest, now in it’s seventh year, will take place this Saturday in the area just south of the bridge named Roebling Point. The festival which started as a midday celebration on a Sunday afternoon has now gown into a full day event on Saturday to be closed out by Rozzi Fireworks. As the festival has grown, so has the vision as it now features not only a focus on history, but also a focus on local food and local music among other things. It is a true mix brought forth by a collaborative effort of organizers from the Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge Committee (the CCSBC) as well as the businesses in the Roebling Point Entertainment District.

This well known landmark is featured everywhere from the backdrop of local newscasts to the logo of your favorite site that talks about all things in the urban core. The bridge was just painted for the first time in almost thirty-five years and new lights have begun the process of restoring the bridge to its true glory. The CCSBC is dedicated to doing even more to modernize the lighting and maintaining the flags on the bridge, and while memberships are available via the web on an ongoing basis, this festival marks one way for the group to raise money annually.

As the roots of the festival focused on the history of the Roebling Bridge, a prototype for New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, there will be walking tours given of the bridge, the floodwall murals, and other historical Covington landmarks for $5 per tour. The tours are scheduled to go off on an hourly basis from 1p through 4p. It should be noted that there are no tours of the bridge that will allow folks to go to the top, but there will be a silent auction for such a trip which includes dinner for four at Keystone Bar & Grill.

In addition to a historical focus, this year’s event features quite a food selection. Of course all the local establishments that are part of the Roebling Point Entertainment District will be out including Keystone, Blinkers, Sidebar, The Down Under and Molly Malone’s. This year too features a few less traditional vendors including Covington’s Amerasia as well as both the Dojo Gelato cart and (making their inaugural outdoor appearance) Pho Lang Thang from Findlay Market. Add in a Roebling Porter from Rivertown Brewing and a special small batch Moerlein Roebling Fest Lager and there are plenty of special drinks to go around too.

Additionally, this year’s festival also features quite a line-up of music that is scheduled to run from 1pm to 1015pm. With the focus being on local & original music, this is one area that Roeblingfest 2011 has really differentiated itself from years gone by. With the stage located in the heart of the square at Court Street and Park Place, it will be a definite focal point throughout the day featuring bands from all across the region and it will have a true mix of genres too.

1pm to 1:45p – Perfect Sequel
2pm to 2:45pm – The Crick Gypsies
3:15pm to 4:15pm – Supermassive
4:45pm to 6pm – The Spookfloaters
6:30pm to 7:15pm – The Chocolate Horse
7:45pm to 8:45pm – The Dukes
9:15pm to 10:15pm – The Lions Rampant

Add in an art show as well as the finish line for the 2011 Covington Quest and the 2011 Roeblingfest has a little something for everyone. As parking could be challenging, the use of public transportation is most definitely recommended and the TANK Southbank Shuttle will be more than sufficient. Taking the shuttle will allow festival goers to park in downtown Cincinnati, Newport, or other parts of Covington and get to and from the festival for only $1 each way.

Riverfront Fusion to bring first live music to new Cincinnati Riverfront Park

Update: Due to potential severe weather, the Riverfront Fusion concert has been postponed.

The first public concert will be held at the Cincinnati Riverfront Park (CRP) Schmidlapp Event Lawn on Thursday, May 26. The Riverfront Fusion event will follow the Women’s Committee of Cincinnati Riverfront Park fifth annual ‘Hats Off’ Luncheon which will also be held on the event lawn.

Riverfront Fusion will run from 5:30pm to 9pm and include four live bands from the Cincinnati region, and feature a variety of musical styles including Jazz, R&B, Rock and Salsa. Event organizers say Riverfront Fusion will be the first of many similar cultural events for which the CRP was designed to feature.

“The impact of this park to drive tourism, business, real estate values and regional health cannot be understated,” Debbie Oliver and Helen Heekin, co-founders of the Women’s Committee, said in a prepared release. “As more features in the park are completed over the next months, it will be clear that this park will become our city’s new front door.”

Organizers say that food and drink will be available for purchase from Montgomery Inn, and that music will be provided by Acapulco, Groove Doctor, Triage and Second Wind.

Know Theatre hosts Little Kings kickoff tour

Beer, comedy, and a good cause make for a lively night at Know Theater , located on 1120 Jackson Street {map} in the arts district of Over-the-Rhine. Friday May 20th, Little King’s Cream Ale kicks off its Groovy World Tour with spokesperson Kevin Downey Jr., in the city where Little Kings originated. The tour will visit all 40 states that currently sell Little Kings Beer.

At The Know Theater, the evening’s festivities begins at 7:30 PM with special prices on Little Kings, and music provided by DJ Blakkoutt. The party moves to the stage at 9:30 pm with a comedy show hosted by Metromix’s Katie Clavey, with performances by local comedian Alex Stone and New York City comedian, Kevin Downey Jr.

Downey Jr’s comedy act is not your average stand up routine. “If you’re into wacky impressions, props and puppets, this is not your kind of show,” Downey Jr. said. “If you’re into something alternative and funny, and Little Kings Beer, the Know Theater is the place to be this Friday.”

As part of the Groovy World Tour, fans of Little Kings Beer can proclaim their love with a King’s Proclamation, a 140 character or less statement explaining why customers love Little Kings Beer. Once a proclamation is made, customers have a chance to win a free T-shirt.

“A proclamation is a one or two line bit about the beer or the magic that happens when you drink Little Kings, “Downey Jr. said. “For example, Little Kings Cream Ale is like jazz for your taste buds.”

You can purchase tickets for the Little Kings Cream Ale Comedy Tour at the Know Theater for $15 per person or online. All proceeds benefit the Know Theater. Included in the ticket price is entrance to the after party at Lunar night club, located on Elm Street and beginning at 11:30 pm., where guests can finish the night off in style.

Cincinnati-area transit agencies to offer free rides on Bike to Work Day

**Correction** This THURSDAY, May 19 is Bike to Work Day!

Thursday, May 19 is Bike to Work Day, and to celebrate Metro, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) and Clermont Transportation Connection (CTC) are offering free transit rides to bicycle commuters.

All three bus service providers have buses equipped with bike racks on the front of each bus, and transit officials say that the racks can be used at all bus stops including Government Square downtown. Bicycles are currently not permitted inside the buses due to safety and capacity issues, but each bike rack is capable of accommodating two bicycles.

“TANK’s bike racks have been very popular,” said Andrew Aiello, TANK’s General Manager. “It’s a win-win for people who want to commute part of the way on bike and finish the trip on transit.”

Metro officials say that the Bike to Work Day special is not just to get bicyclists out on the national event, but also encourage more bike riders to utilize bus service to maximize their mobility.

“We hope that Bike to Work Day encourages even more bike riders to use public transportation while still enjoying the benefits of cycling,” Metro CEO Terry Garcia Crews said in a prepared release.

Both Metro and TANK will be on Fountain Square to celebrate Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 19 from 11:30am to 1pm. Organizers say that the festivities will include a commuter center that will demonstrate the ease of biking and riding buses.

Furthermore, all week long bicycle commuters will be treated to commuter stations that will include free coffee, mechanical checks and other treats as appreciation for biking to work. Cincinnati-area commuter stations will be located at 12 sites throughout the city.
