Independent t-shirt festival to dress Fountain Square – 7/16

Independent fashion designers from around Cincinnati will gather on Fountain Square on Friday, July 16 for the third annual Cincinnati T-Shirt Festival. The event will showcase Cincinnati-themed t-shirts from 14 different vendors, including five new vendors to this year’s festival.

The 2010 Cincinnati T-Shirt Festival will run from 11am to 11pm, and is free and open to the public thanks to Cincy Apparel. Vendors at this year’s event include title sponsor Cincy Apparel, Deadstar Apparel, Southpaw Prints, Rockit, Allscreen Image Marketing, Park+Vine, Alternative Motive, Wire & Twine, Donkey Ts, Anonymous Skate Shop, Unheardof Boutique, Able Projects, Ski Cincinnati, and Proforma Albrecht Co.

Coinciding with the t-shirt festival from 7pm to 10pm is PNC MidPoint’s Indie Summer concert series that will feature The Western; Flux Capacitors; Pop Empire; and You, You’re Awesome in that performance order. Those looking for an extra special experience during the music performances should take advantage of Via Vite’s rooftop terrace which boasts sweeping views of Fountain Square in addition to their food and drink selection.

Free bicycle parking is available inside the Fountain Square Parking Garage and on the square itself. Metro bus service (plan your trip) is readily accessible from all routes that run to the Government Square Transit Center.

Experience the 2010 FIFA World Cup on Fountain Square

Fountain Square will serve as THE spot to catch all of your World Cup action as the United States enters with one of its most promising teams in recent memory. The United States will take on the third-ranked team in the world, and long-time rival, England on Saturday, June 12 from 1:30pm to 5pm in Rustenburg, South Africa.

The United States team finished first in the 2010 Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) World Cup Qualifier just ahead of Mexico. The United States/England rivalry is especially interesting as the 1950 England vs. United States game was one of the most shocking upsets in soccer history.  The U.S. defeated England in Brazil 1-0 thanks to a stunning header in the 37th Minute. Since that time the game has been called the “Miracle on Grass” and has caused much controversy and tension between the two squads.

The Fountain Square Management Group states that Coca-Cola products and adult beverages will be available for purchase while you watch the game on Fountain Square’s giant video board.

Fountain Square will continue to be the central gathering space for soccer fans throughout the World Cup as the management group has stated that all FIFA games will be shown unless there is a conflict with an event on the Square or a Reds baseball game.

The World Cup will conclude on Sunday, July 11, and to celebrate Fountain Square will be hosting a foosball tournament before and after the championship World Cup game. There will also be live music from 7pm to 9pm, international foods, import and domestic beer and other special features.

Those interested in participating in the double-elimination, two-player per side foosball tournament are encouraged to pre-register online, but organizers note that walk-up registration will be available on July 11th from 11am to 11:30am. Team registration costs $5 and the tournament champion will win $250 with smaller prizes being awarded throughout the tournament. Competitors must be 18 years of age or older.

Metro to award free bus passes to best transit story submissions

On Thursday, May 27 Metro will kick off their “Tell Us Your Story” contest on Fountain Square from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Organizers say that the event will include table displays, entertainment, prizes, giveaways and tours will be available on one of Metro’s new articulated buses to be parked on Walnut Street.

The contest asks for video or written entries that tell a story about how transit benefits you or your community in terms of the economy and jobs, the environment, energy independence, and quality of life. Those submitting entries can submit videos or written entries Metro’s website, or by submitting your written entry via email on a form provided on the transit agency’s website.

Entries will be accepted from Thursday, May 27 through Saturday, July 31 of this year. The top four video and top four written entries will be selected and awarded a one-month Metro bus pass. Two grand prize winners will be selected by the public between August 3rd and August 31st with the two grand prize winners receiving a year of free rides on Metro.

Coffee tasting to be held on Foutain Square – 5/19

Cincinnati is blessed with a large number of terrific local coffee shops, and those interested will be able to partake in a coffee tasting and sampling event on Fountain Square Wednesday, May 19 from 6am to 10am.

Vendors at the coffee tasting will include Baba Budan’s, Awakenings Coffee & Tea Co., Greenup Cafe, Kidd Coffee, Starbucks, Coffee Break Roasting Co., and Murray Coffee LLC.

Coffee tasters are welcome to sit down and enjoy their coffee on Fountain Square with KISS 107 FM’s morning show, or they can take their coffee to-go as they make their way to work. Staff from the local coffee shops will be on-hand to share their knowledge and love of coffee. According to event organizers, there will also be tea selections to sample for those not interested in coffee. There will also be pastries, coffee cakes, donuts and bagels available for purchase.

The Rippe & Kingston Coffee Tasting on Fountain Square (map) is free and open to the public, but samples will cost between 25 and 50 cents. Regular sizes will also be available at the selected vendor’s normal price.

Live Jazz & Wine Tasting on Fountain Square – 5/7

Fountain Square will play host to a wine tasting and sampling event with dozens of wines from around the world Friday, May 7 – making it the place to end the work week.

Event organizers state that knowledgeable staff will be on hand Cork ‘N Bottle to help guests explore the wine selection and learn about each wine they taste. There will also be food available for purchase and live jazz by the Faux Frenchman (5pm to 8pm) and the Chris Comer Trio (8pm to 11pm) filling Fountain Square with music.

The wine tasting will start at 5pm and last until 11pm. Admission is free, but those wanting to engage in the wine tasting will have to purchase wine tickets that can be exchanged for small tastings or full glasses. For those not interested in the wine, then the music and calm spring night should be enough to get you out and out on Fountain Square for the evening.
