Mt. Adams Music Festival this weekend

The 2009 Mt. Adams Music Festival will feature performances by the Shiny Toy Guns, Framing Hanley, Josh Krajcik and much more this Friday and Saturday in one of the city’s hippest nightlife hotspots.

The festival (MySpace page) will kick off at 5:30pm with the last band starting at 10pm each of the nights. The $5 entry fee for Friday and $10 entry fee for Saturday will include your admission to the event and all participating bars in Mt. Adams.

Great ways to enjoy Cincinnati Parks

The way things are going these days, it’s tough for some families to afford a trip to the movies. Luckily, in addition to the family-friendly movies every Saturday on Fountain Square (at 7 & 9pm), the Cincinnati Parks Foundation has been showing family friendly movies in our parks all around the Cincinnati area.

Forget paying to see a movie and having to buy overpriced concessions, there are great movie options literally in your backyard! All movies start at dusk and will have concessions available.

Below are some of the remaining movie nights:

August 8th, Rapid Run Park
Movie: Madagascar 2 (there will be pre-movie events such as canoeing, face painting, balloon artist and magician)

August 14th, Mt Echo Park
Movie: Hotel for Dogs

August 29th, Mt Airy Forest
Movie: Hotel for Dogs (repeat)

If you are looking more for musical fare, the 16th annual “Its Commonly Jazz” series is being kicked off this week at Eden Park in Mt. Adams. Since I’m not really familiar with jazz and we have been provided with a relatively cool summer thus far, these concerts are a great way to get a free introduction.

The website is billing this event as “staying green”, but it’s not clear whether there is an actual intent to have eco-friendly anything or if it is just a play on words since all events are outdoors. From what I understand, you can bring a picnic to enjoy while watching the music, but I am not sure whether alcohol will be allowed. The website gives good background on each of the performers, but seems to be a bit underdeveloped beyond that.

Below is the line up, all shows are from 6-8pm:
August 6th – Othello Molineaux & the Art Gore Quartet
August 13th – Vintage Keys
August 20th – Terell Stafford w/ the Erwin Stuckey Trio
August 27th – Mandy Gaines and her Dream Band

Maybe the economy has made the local government and parks board boost these kinds of outdoor events, or maybe they are just better publicized these days, but I hope they keep it up. Hopefully as more people get out of doors and enjoy our local parks they will better appreciate the wonderful parks system we have and the great amount of forethought that goes into the planning of the events that are planned in them. Many people do not know we have one of the top parks systems in the nation, and these events are a great way to get out and enjoy them for free!

This Week In Soapbox 7/14

Metro debuts new hybrid buses

Metro will debut the first 6 of their 15 new hybrid buses on Tuesday, April 21st. The ceremony (10:30am) will take place at the Twin Lakes Overlook in Eden Park where Mayor Mallory, ODOT and others will dedicate the new buses that will then be paraded (11:00am) through Eden Park, past Mirror Lake and into downtown via 5th Street to Fountain Square.

The new hybrid buses will have a “unique go*GREEN hybrid design” that will reduce soot and hydrocarbon emissions by at least 90% and use about 30% less fuel that the typical Metro bus. Additional hybrid buses will be purchased next year with some of the $17.5 million that Metro received from stimulus funds in March.

The 6 new hybrid buses will go into service the next day and will be featured in a lunchtime Earth Day event on Fountain Square before officially being launched into service at 1pm. At the Earth Day event, there will be a fashion show of “environmentally-conscience and bike beautiful” fashions. The models will arrive on the new hybrid buses and will use the Flower Carpet, on Fountain Square, as their runway. Visitors will also be able to check out the new hybrid buses and get more information on Metro during the event.

Cincinnati in the spring

With temperatures rising to seasonably warm measures, and bountiful sunlight bathing the ambrosial green carpets that are sheathed with flowering trees and blossoming tulips, Cincinnati is rolling out the customary welcome mat to spring by hosting several events that are well worth attending.

Running until April 12, the Krohn Conservatory is hosting its annual Peaceful Spring Show, where the gardens are overflowing with countless early spring flowers and scented lilies that offer heightened sensual delights. The Conservatory, an Art-Deco relic from 1933, is open from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. five days a week, and will have extended hours from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. on Sunday, April 12.

Beginning on April 6, the Cincinnati Zoo is hosting its annual Zoo Blooms until April 30 during normal zoo hours, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. The Zoo is one of two botanical gardens in the state, and features a colorful palette of more than 80,000 tulips and flora. Also during April is the Tunes and Blooms that is offered every Thursday in April from 6 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Guests can enjoy great melodic music while strolling the park and taking in the evening daylight. For this season, eight bands will be highlighting this popular event.

Finally, the Cincinnati Flower Show is hosting its 20th Anniversary Celebration and annual flower show at Symmes Township Park from April 18 to April 26. The event is generally regarded as an acclaimed flower show that feature numerous, spectacular exhibits, social events, plant and gardener’s markets, a lecture series and more.
