Brew Ha-Ha returns to Sawyer Point for 4th straight year this weekend

Comedy and beer will come together this weekend as Cincinnati Brew Ha-Ha returns to Sawyer Point. Now in its fourth year, the event will feature 50 comedians on three stages, 80 beers, live music, and plenty of food.

This year’s comedic headliners are Bobcat Goldthwait (Friday) and Tim Wilson (Saturday). Organizers say that with a full schedule of comedians and live bands, there is bound to be something for everyone.

The event will feature a vast collection of craft beer including a wide assortment of Cincinnati-area beers like Christian Moerlein, Samuel Adams, Alltech (makers of the famous Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale), and Rivertown brewers. The food will also be local and offer up Italian, German, Cincinnati-style chili, and barbecue food options.

In addition to the stand-up comedy, food and beer, event-goers will be treated to live music from The SwimSuitModels on Friday, and the Stays in Vegas Band on Saturday.

The 2010 Cincinnati Brew Ha-Ha will run from 5pm to midnight on Friday, and 4pm to midnight on Saturday at Sawyer Point. Admission is free, allowing everyone to enjoy the comedy. To drink, guests must purchase a $5 wristband and tickets for $1 each. One ticket will get you a sample size of beer, and four tickets will get you a full serving.

Automobile parking will be available at Sawyer Point (map), but in the name of safety, Brew Ha-Ha may be the perfect event for utilizing Metro bus service. Free bicycle parking is also available for this event.

Aural Grid musical art installation to hit OTR’s streets this weekend

Aural GridStrange sounds may be heard on Saturday when a “musical-spatial exploration” will be taking place.  The event will be centered on Main, Orchard, Sycamore, and 13th Streets in Cincinnati’s historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.  Those interested in attending are encouraged to stand, walk, run, dance, or bike down these streets to experience the piece.

Named Aural Grid, the event is being presented by the CS13 Gallery, Project CincinnatUS, and The Marburg Collective, and the project is being partially funded by an Individual Artist Grant provided by the City of Cincinnati to Project CincinnatUS.

Project CincinnatUS states that their mission is to present “a year-long performative exploration of the ways in which Cincinnatians relate to each other, their histories, and their city.”

The musical installation will take place on Saturday, August 21 from 5pm to 6pm.  A potluck cookout will be held at 212 Orchard Street following the installation, and will include a performance from the band Turmeric.  For more information on this and future Project CincinnatUS events, follow the group on Twitter @ProjectUS and become a fan on Facebook.

Downtown Cincinnati eatery to celebrate reopening after complete redesign

On the evening of Friday, August 20, Cincinnatians will have an opportunity to be re-introduced to a local restaurant now known as The Bistro.  The restaurant owners plan to host a party to show off the recent changes that took place following the well-publicized split of Jean-Robert de Cavel from the Relish Group.

With native chef Chris Burns at the helm, owners at The Bistro say that the restaurant will focus on bringing local fare to the dinner table by using ingredients that are locally sourced.  This new focus is complimented by the interior décor which has also been updated with a fresh look.

The owners say that this Friday’s event is not really about the food as much as it is about the space. With The Bistro Bar Bash starting at 5pm and going until close, it is an opportunity for folks to see what the changes are about, enjoy some drink specials, and try out some of the food for free.

The Bistro has always featured a small but tremendous selection of microbrews, and that has not changed with the renovations.  This Friday night, twelve craft beers will be available all night long for $3 each.  There will also be $5 “You Call It” cocktails, as well as food from the bar menu offered up for free the entire evening.  Finally, The Bistro will be hosting DJ Gerald to spin some music and liven up the atmosphere for the evening.

Add in the weekly PNC MidPoint Indie Music Series on Fountain Square for a complete night of affordable entertainment in downtown Cincinnati. As with each and every other Friday night during the summer there will be four bands that take the stage starting at 7pm. This week’s headliner is local favorite Bad Veins who will be spending the fall on a national tour opening for Frightened Rabbit and Two Door Cinema Club.

Located only a half-block from Fountain Square at 413 Vine Street, The Bistro is easily accessible for many in the city. If arriving by car, there is easy parking either in the Fountain Square Garage or directly across the street at the Westin Garage.  Free bicycle parking is readily available nearby, and you can easily access both events with Metro bus service (plan your trip).

Randy Simes to appear on 95.7 FM’s Queen City Awesome radio show – 8/18

On Wednesday, August 18 you will be able to listen to yours truly on the radio from 5pm to 6pm on WVQC, 95.7 FM. I will be the featured guest on the weekly Queen City Awesome radio show hosted by Pat Feghali. During the show, Pat and I will be discussing a variety of topics including sustainable transport, green design, and even urban gardening.

Like other Queen City Awesome broadcasts, Pat and I will also discuss some music, and I will share a brief selection of some of my favorite Cincinnati-area artists including The National, Lions Rampant, Wussy, The Seedy Seeds, and Hi-Tek (sample below).

WVQC has recently returned to the 95.7 FM airwaves after an antenna problem that briefly kept the station to Internet only broadcasts on WVQC.org. Launched in early 2010, WVQC is run by Media Bridges which also operates four of the city’s public access television channels and the Internet radio station for WVQC called The Bridge.

Due to the low-power frequency, WVQC can only be heard on 95.7 FM within three to five miles of the station’s Over-the-Rhine location at Race Street and Central Parkway. Those outside the immediate listening area are encouraged to tune in online.

2010 Mt. Adams Music Festival to offer free admission – 8/14

The 5th annual Mt. Adams Music Festival is the spot to check out some great live music on Saturday, August 14 from 3pm to 11:30pm. This year’s festival will feature six rock bands including national recording artist New Medicine.

Joining New Medicine at this year’s festival is AutoVaughn, Gran Bel Fisher, Northern Liberties, Buffalo Killers, and Josh Krajcik. A sample of each of the bands’ music can be found on the festival’s website, along with AutoVaughn’s ‘The Cycles’ below.

Due to the growth in sponsorships, this year’s festival will have free admission. Organizers also state that light food and drink are going to be available for purchase, with beer provided by Christian Moerlein.

Parking tends to get crowded in Mt. Adams (map), especially in the evenings, so plan to take Metro bus service (plan your trip), carpool, walk, or ride your bike.
