Cincinnati needs its own version of ‘Little Big Berlin’

These types of videos have become all the rage lately, and rightfully so. They are simply stunning in their production quality and the overall content they capture.

Little Big Berlin does a particularly good job capturing the human element found within cities. The video showcases Berliners functioning within their city. Many of the scenes are playful, but others are just typical day-to-day functions made intriguing by the essence of this videography.

The video utilizes “tilt-shift” to create the miniature effect, and is set to the music of “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” by Franz Liszt. I do not know how to achieve this kind of product myself, but I do know that someone in Cincinnati needs to do this for our city.

300′ geothermal wells being drilled at new Cincinnati Riverfront Park

Several components of the first phase of the 45-acre Cincinnati Riverfront Park are nearing completion, or are reaching significant milestones.  The foundation for the Moerlein Lager House and Jacob G. Schmidlapp Stage & Event Lawn are complete, the foundations to the Roebling Suspension Bridge are being reset to accommodate a realigned Mehring Way, and the first section of the Hamilton County-controlled parking garage is now open.

Also underway is the drilling of 300-foot geothermal wells that will provide the air conditioning for the Bike, Mobility & Visitors’ Center.  The geothermal wells will provide a natural cooling mechanism that leverages the 56-degree temperatures found in the ground year-round.

The first phase of the Cincinnati Riverfront Park will also include the Black Brigade Monument, a labyrinth, tree groves, Main Street Garden, first section of an expanded riverfront bike trail, the Women’s Garden, and more.  According to project officials, the first phase of construction is currently within budget and on-schedule for a spring 2011 completion.  Later phases of construction will proceed as funding is available for the total $120 million project.

7/79 video takes viewers on unique visual tour of Cincinnati’s center city

Cincinnati’s majestic hillsides, mighty river, and dramatic city skyline provide powerful vistas and scenery that make the Queen City unique. Many Cincinnatians and visitors from out-of-town know of the dramatic view from the Cut-in-the-Hill in Northern Kentucky, the many hilltop parks, or the streetscapes throughout the center city, but most have not seen the city from the air and water.

Seven/Seventy-Nine produced a two-and-a-half minute video for Soapbox Cincinnati that explores both of these. The video Seeing Cincinnati takes viewers into a helicopter tour offered by Stratus Helicopters and a boat ride from Ride the Ducks, both of which operate out of Newport on the Levee.

Vote for Metro’s “Tell Us Your Story” contest winners through 8/31

After Metro kicked off the “Tell Us Your Story” in May 2010, hundreds of bus riders submitted their stories about how transit benefits their lives and their community in terms of jobs, the environment, energy independence, and overall quality of life.

The many entries have now been whittled down to five finalists for both written and video submissions, and now Metro is asking the public to vote on its favorite entry in both categories. The winning entry from each category will a year of free rides on Metro, while the remaining four entries will each win a month of free rides.

“Riders shared stories about growing up, family traditions, poems, songs and raps with one thing in common – the difference Metro made in their lives,” said Metro CEO, Marilyn Shazor.

The five written story finalists include Teresa Roush from Wilmington, Ernest Disney Britton from Hyde Park, Jalilisha Dixon from Finneytown, Kelly Drinan from Amberley, and Sidney Coleman from Silverton. Online voting runs through August 31st, and the grand prize winners will be announced on Wednesday, September 1. Ten voters will also randomly be selected to win prizes of their own.

Take a mini-tour of UC’s dramatic architecture and urban campus

The campus of the University of Cincinnati has been called one of the most dynamic urban campuses in the world, and recently named one of the world’s most beautiful campuses by Forbes Magazine.  Stunning architecture is met by dramatic urban spaces in the heart of Uptown Cincinnati, and it can all be seen in this video produced by Soapbox Cincinnati.

“There are at least a dozen buildings designed by world-renowned architects in partnership with local architects,” said Michaele Pride, Director, School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati.  “The highest concentration of these special buildings align with what is now known as Main Street in the center of campus.”
